About SKIRT Days

The SKIRT Days are a regularly returning event that aims at presenting the latest technical developments, showcasing recent scientific results, and discussing ongoing and/or planned research in the broad SKIRT community. All entendees will have an opportunity to present their work. In addition, there will be a opportunities for one-on-one discussions in a relaxed setting.
Conference topics include but are not limited to:

  • Dust radiative transfer
  • X-ray radiative transfer
  • LTE and non-LTE line radiative transfer on atoms and molecules
  • Post-processing cosmological hydrodynamical simulations
  • AGN nuclei and circumnuclear media
  • Resonant line radiative transfer, including Lyman-alpha
  • Monte Carlo radiative transfer techniques
  • Polarised radiative transfer
  • Radiative transfer and machine learning
  • Comparing synthetic to actual observations

Lunch

Lunch will be provided for all three days, including sandwiches and soup, along with a coffee break.

Accommodation

Participants are required to arrange their own accommodation. Ghent offers a wide range of options, from hotels to Airbnbs, many of which are conveniently located in the city centre. As a major tourist destination, booking early is recommended to secure the best choices. You can find a list of several recommended options here.

Ghent

Once again, the SKIRT days take place in the charming, medieval city of Ghent. Once the second largest city in Europe, Ghent still stands out for its well-preserved historic city center, full of picturesque canals and squares. After the conference, make sure to grab a waffle and stroll in the majestic city centre, taste a local beer at a brewery, and admire its beautifully lit towers.

Getting to Ghent

Ghent is very well connected with the rest of Europe by train; your end destination should be Gent Sint Pieters. If you are flying, Belgium has two major airports: Zaventem (BRU) and Charleroi (CRL), with most intercontinental flights operating from the first one and budget airlines operating from the latter. From Zaventem, you can catch a train to Ghent Sint Pieters, while from Charleroi, Flibco buses to and from Ghent run all day.

Getting around Ghent

Getting around the city is rather straightforward. Google Maps is very reliable. Ghent, like all of Belgium, is very bike-oriented, so beware of the bikers! You can rent a bike to go around or use public transport (make sure to buy the 10-ticket batches for a better deal!).
